Working the abs is about keeping the tension on the muscle. That is what working any muscles group is all about. The tension doesn’t just have to be on the upward motion but also on the downward motion.

Many people who lift weights use the principle of isometrics. This involves keeping the same amount of tension on the muscle throughout the entire exercise. Don’t drop the weight after you’ve put so much effort into lifting it. Let it down slowly so the muscle is forced to continue to work. Results will come twice as fast this way.
Leg Raises
This exercise starts out in crunch position, but instead of raising your upper abs, they are already engaged. With your lower back firmly on the floor, raise your legs straight up in the air. You can leave a bend in the legs if you need to. As you bring your legs up towards the ceiling crunch a little harder with your upper abs. this exercise works both upper and lower abs at the same time.
Bicycle Crunches
This exercise works all areas of the abdominal muscles at the same time. With upper abs engaged, start with one leg straight out and the other bent at the knee. The legs will alternate and the opposite elbow will reach for the opposite knee. This exercise is fast so it is important to keep squeezing the abs. When you twist resist the urge to swing, but instead use your oblique muscles throughout the motion.
Belly Dancing
It is not a crunch but it is an effective abs exercise. It takes strong abs to move the hips from side to side like that. Perform the moves slowly and then when your abs are stronger, you’ll be able to move just as fast as the professionals. Have fun with the music and the clothing also as you swing those abs into shape.
